Friendly Persuasion was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Music – Song, Best Writing – Screenplay (Adapted), and Best Sound Recording.

Adapted from the best-selling novel, Friendly Persuasion is set in Southern Indiana in the early days of the Civil War. Gary Cooper plays Jess Birdwell, patriarch of a pacifist Quaker family. Birdwell's son, Josh (Anthony Perkins), joins the Home Guard to protect his family’s farm, which disturbs his mother Eliza (Dorothy McGuire).  Other subplots include the various humorous family experiences.
